The Brown family is not a close knit family. They are hard workers but show no emotion or love. I went through my whole life wondering if I were adopted because of this. They are very proud of their name. I was never shown any love, hugs or kisses. None of us were. I vowed to do different with my little ones and I used my rocker often and read stories to them at night and after rocked the hurts away. I remember going to the Brown family reunion which was held outside Arcanum at the Will Clark residence. Mrs Clark being a sister to my Grandma (Candis Victoria) Brown. The giant red brick house had a big ‘L’ shaped porch and boasted both a front staircase and a back staircase which came down to the kitchen. They had a giant bank barn and also another barn where men sat up sawhorses and put planks on them and covered them and then the women filled them with tons of food.

Grandma and Grandpa Brown also had
Franklin W. Brown, born Jan 14, 1895, died May 20, 1904; and
Esther May, stillborn on Aug. 25, 1914. How awful it must have been to have your children die.
[Joyce Lee Story:]
I was born August 26, 1934, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio at 2:15 PM, weighing in at 8 lbs 1 ¾ oz. Dr. O. M. Graham did the honors from Phillipsburg, Ohio. His nurse Mary Daevil. We lived at 2552 Gettysburg Ave. in Dayton, Ohio. Later we moved to a little town called Arcanum, Ohio on Main Street in a beautiful two story yellow house. I wish we could have stayed there. I loved it. A Mr. and Mrs. Haffman lived across the street and he was a funeral director. I used to go over there and they would give me ice cream.
We lived there till I started to school and then we moved to 7 Ivester Lane in Arcanum and our phone was 101M. I was already in second grade when we moved. My brothers and I had rabbits that we raised in the garage. They went around 3 sides of the garage and we stacked them 3 high. We sold them. While we lived there, I took my brother’s B-B gun and shot street lights out in front of our house. I can still hear my daddy [Lee] saying to police, “Not my girl, you must mean my boys.” I was never punished as none of us were because my dad was severly beaten by his father [Norman].
We kids had a paper route in Arcanum and each of us took a different part of town and we were out in all kinds of weather. The papers were left at the old Kincaid Restaurent where a new restaurent is now. Daddy had a paper route on Sunday morning and we would take turns going with him. We passed [the] Greenville Advocate and he passed the Dayton Daily News. His was a country route.
My father went to college at Miami Jacobs in Dayton Ohio where my future husband later went for more mechanics schooling. As daddy had a good education and got a good job with Kroger Company 1st in the office in Dayton and my brothers and I took turns going in on Saturday with him and we played on typewriters. He took my mother [Hazel] to grandma Campbell’s. She and grandpa lived on Liscum Drive across from Soldiers Home. My father retired from Krogers. I never knew how hard the depression hit because of his good job.
In the year 1950 my father lost his mind, or so I thought. He bought a farm close to New Madison, Ohio and to a young girl who had grown up in a small town, this was a wilderness. I did find out later we were only 2 miles from another small town like Arcanum. It was New Madison. The school there was about the same as my old school. We attended a small country church, it was Otterbein Church. It was there I taught teenagers class and sang solos in church and also played piano. My dream had always been to be a majorette in the school band, so I bought a baton and for hours I practiced in our yard. When I was to enter my senior year, I ask my dad if I could transfer back to Arcanum as New Madison didn’t need any more majorettes. He let me and I tried out and got 1st place.
When I graduated in 1952, we had 22 in our class, one of them was Ottmar Kulmar who was a German exchange student. After graduating, I got a job in a 5 and 10 cent store in Greenville. I was in the hardware department. I met a nice boy there and we dated for quite a while and became engaged but it wasn’t long before I realized I was pregnant and the boy and I both lost our jobs. My dad got me a job at Kroger’s but I didn’t have an aptitude for numbers and didn’t last very long. I stayed home until my baby was born on June 5, 1953, a boy who I named Daryl Lyn. I then found out the boy had 2 other girls pregnant also and his dad said he had to marry one of us, so he picked his old girl friend, and she lost her baby.
“Brown Family As I Know it” By Joyce Lee Brown Noggle Page 3
At this point, I needed a job so I went to Greenville and got a job as a soda jerk at the oldCentral Drug Store (Pipe Store is there now). One evening, I was closing and I heard the bell jingle above the door. I looked up and a man in an army uniform was standing in the doorway. I thought to myself that had to be the most handsome man in the world and I knew I was going to marry him. Only after I started dating him and met his family did I realize that he was the older brother of the boy I had dated and had his baby. He had been in Korea so I never met him. We were married December 24, 1953. I had known him only 4 months. When we married, Daryl was only 6 months old, so Bill adopted him. We were blessed with 5 children besides Daryl: Melody Ann came on February 8, 1956; we lost a baby in Feb., 1955; then came Scott Alan, August 31, 1958 and he got sick at 3 months and about lost him. He had to have a tube inserted in his mouth and they took a spot off his lung. Then came Robert Brent on Feb. 18, 1960 and Kimberly Kay, Sept 11, 1961; and on March 14, 1965, we had Tracy Dianne which caused me a lot of trouble and I won’t get into it except to say I died [?] having her.
About this time or a little later, Daryl and Barbara decided to rob a bank in New Madison,Ohio. They did and when they tried to get away, they were caught because they used bicycles. He was sent to Columbus and she to Marysville. When they came home, they were married in First United Methodist Church in Greenville, Ohio on July 21, 1973. She had a beautiful gown. Barbara had Michael Lyn [on] May 6, 1975; about 8 months down the road she became sick and found out she had MS (multiple sclerosis). So my parents, Lee and Hazel Brown, took Michael for a while. Barbara got a little better and then Daryl was in a mini-bike wreck and he nearly died. He has never been the same since, he suffers from seizures. But in 1979, Jan . 22, Melissa Annette was born to them and July 30, 1980, Mark Allen was stillborn. With all of their problems, my mother and dad continued to keep Michael. Daryl liked his grandpa Brown a lot and it was this that caused him to change his last name to ‘Brown’. This hurt his {adopted] dad [Bill Noggle] so much.
After Bill and I were married, I moved from job to job trying to find my own special niche in life. I worked as a waitress at Rapp’s Restaurant and Bill cooked there. We worked the late shift and took the money to the bank. I quit there as I wasn’t feeling well and I lost a baby. It was February, 1957, but we [had] had a baby the Feb 8, 1956, Melody Ann. There we [had] had a first grandson and first grand- daughter on both sides. I went back to work at C & M Restaurant but didn’t care for the boss so I quit and went to Dayton, Ohio and worked a morning shift there but it didn’t last long as I had to get up at 4:00 AM. I then got a job at Snell’s Restaurant on Broadway and I worked there twice. The man…… …………………………….
at this point, Page 8 of Joyce Lee’s handwritten manuscript is missing and skips to page 9.Handwritten by Betty Brown on the back of page 7:
Melody Ann married David Franklin Addington on June 14, 1974. They bought the house next to mother and daddy [Hazel and Lee] , the farms joined. Nathian David was born — next page Cont.
Joyce Lee Manuscript p. 9 continues: on July 12, 1977 and Wesley David on July 17, 1979. Scott married Pamela Sue Walden on July 6, 1978. They had no children. Scott joined the army 1978 to 1980 and when he got out, he and Pam came home. It wasn’t long till they divorced. Scott had been soldier of the month twice; he was Private first Class. Pamela later married Rich Werner. Scott now has a girl friend, Bonnie Sue McCoy Kloecker. I have come to love her as much if not more than Pam.
“Brown Family As I Know it” By Joyce Lee Brown Noggle Page 4
It was after all of this, in 1983 that Bill died, turning all of our worlds upside down. We didn’t know where to turn and no one to turn to but God. Our house had been partially burned down and we moved till it was livable and then it was vandalized and me working and running to Dayton all the time to see Bill, and he died Jan 30, 1983. Rob was in Air Force and met Joni Deann McCollum Sietz. She had been married to a Japanese man and divorced. Rob and Joni married on Dec. 8, 1984. They had Brent Robert on the previous June 30, 1984 and they say ‘What goes around comes around,’ because when Bill and I got married, Daryl was 6 months old and when Joni and Rob got married, Brent was 6 months old.
Brent had lots of problems. His heart would stop, he had seizures, he couldn’t do anything anormal baby could do. He has been everywhere and had all kinds of operations and still they don’t know what is really wrong. After 9 years he can now walk but still is in a diaper and can’t talk yet or feed himself. [Based on this statement, this part of the ‘history’ was written in 1993 by Joyce Lee when she was 49 years old.]
Then in 1985, [Rob and Joni] had Michael Kyle on Aug, 20. He is so smart they wanted to move him up 2 grades. Kimberly is living in Arkansas and not married and Tracy met and is living with a black guy, David Lee Hendrix. They have lived together for 6 years and David has become an important part of our lives and family. He has a daughter from another relationship and her name is Ashley Nicole.
In 1978 we had a terrible, terrible blizzard and the country was a blanket of white, frothy snowlooking so much like whip cream, but much colder. In those days no one had wood stoves and our electric went out along with our heat. Our neighbours were the same only Lamberts had a wood stove. So we all went to their house and took what food we had and stayed till the storm was over.
[William Harold Noggle passed away from acute leukemia on Jan. 30, 1983.] After Bill was gone, Dave got transferred to Indianapolis and Melody got a job at the Army base over here and they asked me if I would like to come and stay with them and watch boys. We had been here 2 years and we were contacted to see if we would take in Melissa. It was her last chance to stay in the family, so we took her. I have very few regrets in my life, and as I get older, my eyes don’t see as well and my ears do not hear as well. I get tired quicker and the stairs are harder to climb and what hair I have left is gray. I have had a good life, a wonderful man to call my husband and 6 wonderful children and 7grandchildren. When I look back over the memories, I see bad ones, but the good always outshines the bad. I am sure there is a lot I’ve left out, but as far as my life goes, I’ve told it as I remember it.
David has a band called “Wide Open” and is good. He writes songs and sings. I’m to be a great grandma this summer as Michael has a girl in trouble. I broke my engagement to Larry when I met Bill. Daryl’s name was going to be Todd Douglas. When Bill and I got married, Larry was grounded but he came anyhow and got whipped later. I gave Bill a chocolate malt instead of Vanilla shake when I met him [This paragraph seems to be rambling afterthoughts.] [Joyce’s daughter, Kimberly Kay Noggle, died, burning up in a house fire in Hot Springs, Ark. on May 12, 2002]

“Things I Forget”
When Bill came in drug store, he shook me up so much I gave him a vanilla shake, I thought, butit was a chocolate malt. Daryl’s name was to be Todd Douglas. I have no idea where Daryl Lyn came from and when Bill and I got married, Larry was grounded at home, but he came to our wedding and got whipped when he got home. He was married and 16, but lived with his parents. I had broke my engagement to him. I’m to be great grandma this summer but don’t know when. Mike got a girl in trouble. David has his own band called “Wide Open”. I forgot a lot more. David writes and sings his own songs. Tracy was in Tammy’s wedding, also Daryl and Barbs.
